In the opening race at Donald in Victoria, Dean Holland was in the final sprint to the finish line, when his horse veered into the inside rail, causing the 34 year old to fall.

He was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

Dean started racing in SA in 2005, winning his first race at Ceduna in January 2006. He went on to win over 1,000 races across the country.

Jockeys at yesterday’s Gawler meeting honoured him by wearing black arm bands.

A crowdfunding campaign launched to raise money for Dean’s family raised more than $350,000 in less than 24 hours.
