An independent review into the closure of Whyalla Hospital’s birthing unit is underway.
A midwifery workforce shortage has been blamed for the closure, which began last Monday.
Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone says the review is welcome and speed is of the essence.
Mayor Stone reaffirmed comments made by Member for Giles Eddie Hughes, saying the community deserves the ability to give birth in a hospital close to home.
In the meantime, work is underway to employ qualified staff and the primary focus is on the safety and wellbeing of expectant parents in a comfortable environment.
The Council will be maintaining close contact with the State Government and Flinders and Upper North Health Network regarding the matter.
