A research team are securing the future of Coffin Bay’s oyster and fishing industries.
Backed by funding from the Australian Research Council, the team of specialists in marine and freshwater sciences are examining the water quality of the bay.
Project Lead and Flinders University Professor Adrian Werner says threats to the water quality and ecosystem brought the team together.
“At the moment, the water quality of Coffin Bay is showing some signs that there are inputs to the bay that we’d like to reduce – of nutrients in particular, Mr Werner says.
“What we’d like to do is work out, firstly, what are the sources of the nutrients, and then secondly, what happens to the nutrients once they go into the bay, and lastly, what can we do about it?”
He says they’re working with multiple organisations to understand the complex system.
“We’re working with pretty much all of the government agencies that have an interest in this – the council, the EPA, the landscape board, and the South Australian department, plus the oyster industries themselves
“They’re moving ahead with actions… to try to have a positive impact on nutrient levels heading into the bay.”
