Member for Giles Eddie Hughes has called for a national passenger levy to fund security at regional airports, following the axing of Rex Airline’s Whyalla to Adelaide route.
Following the decision by the Whyalla City Council to pass on the cost of airport security screening to all airline operators, Rex, who in some form has been in the city for 37 years, announced they would cut the route from July 1st.
It comes after the Federal Government announced they would no longer fund the screening.
Mr Hughes says a national levy to fund security at small regional airports would add approximately 75 cents to a ticket, as that cost would be smeared over millions of passengers, and the levy should be imposed before the end of the financial year.
