Mortlock Shield was held over the weekend – uniting football players from across the Eyre Peninsula on Centenary Oval.

Lincoln City was the winner of the festival of footy – the underdogs finishing undefeated against Lincoln Districts, Western Eyre, Eastern Eyre, and Great Flinders.

Lincoln City player Johann Wagner, who kicked six goals over the four games, says they were a young team.

“Some really good teams and really good competitors came down – some big bodies – and we were very undersized and I think we just played ruthless footy and fully deserved the win, Wagner said.

“I think we were probably not really rated as a contender, and we’ve just proven to people that you can do anything with determination.”

The team’s captain, Levi McDonald, gave thanks to his team, the sponsors, the organisers, and the teams that travelled to Port Lincoln for the weekend of footy.

“Cheers to our boys… had a few kids cutting their teeth and had a few boys who’ve played a few of these really keen to put their hands up, so really pumped that we got on top of this one,” McDonald said.

At the Mortlock Dinner on Saturday night, 8 June, three men were granted Life Membership of the Mortlock Shield Championship.

Al Schumann from the Eastern Eyre League, Ron Redford from the Western Eyre League, and Steve Milton from the Great Flinders League were honoured with standing ovations when given their membership pins.

Also taking to the stage was radio host and former footy player Erin Phillips, who spoke about her sporting accomplishments from playing basketball in the United States, to becoming captain of the AFLW Port Adelaide Football team.
