Students and teachers from Fisk Street Primary School received a crash course in saltmarsh habitats on World Environment Day last week.
Officers from the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board led participants through the saltmarsh at Eight Mile Creek, inside the Cowleds Landing Sanctuary Zone.
In line with 2023’s World Environment Day theme – ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ – students helped clean rubbish and revegetated a closed vehicle track.
They also learned how saltmarsh habitats are important for fauna like prawns, snapper, blue swimmer crabs, whiting, and shorebirds.
Landscape Board officers said it was great to share the day with the students, teaching them about the important ecosystem.
The educational experience was made possible by the Landscape Board’s Saltmarsh Threat Abatement and Recovery project, funded by National Landcare Program.
