Rex Airlines will cut their Whyalla to Adelaide route from the 1st of July, following changes to airport security screening.
The Whyalla City Council said they’ve been forced to pass on the cost of the screening to all airline operators, as a result of the Federal Government’s decision to cease their funding from June.
In a statement, the company, who have been in the city for 37 years, said the significant additional security cost makes the Whyalla to Adelaide route unviable for the airline, and as a result of the council’s decision, Rex had no option but to exit.
Whyalla Mayor Phill Stone said Rex’s decision is a huge blow for the community, and for the airline to use the council as a scapegoat for their decision is unfair, as they have had ongoing discussions regarding the situation for some time.
