The first shipment of this season’s South Australian grain has begun its voyage to China.
Leaving from Port Lincoln’s grain terminal, it’s the first export of SA grain to China since the removal of the tariff on Australian barley exports.
Viterra General Manager of Supply Chain Derek Robjohns says the removal of the tariff is great for Australian barley growers.
“We look forward to supporting growers in maximising value for their barley through our supply chain to this important market,” Mr Robjohns says.
Viterra General Manager of Operations Gavin Cavanagh says growers have harvested 2 to 4 weeks ahead of time, and delivered over 925,000 tonnes to their sites.
“We’ve just had our biggest October ever,” Mr Cavanagh says.
“We worked closely with our grower customers to understand what they were growing to ensure we were ready to provide a valuable service when they wanted to deliver.”
Another shipment is set to leave Thevenard soon, with 25,000 tonnes of wheat almost finished being loaded onto the ship.
